YOUR STORY: JOY WALLACE

If someone had told me when I was a child that I would someday enjoy kayaking, I would’ve wrinkled my nose at them. Actually, I probably would’ve asked, “What’s kayaking?”

I was never the outdoor type. While my friends enjoyed walking in their neighborhoods, playing in their backyards and exploring the woods around our small town, I much preferred to play with baby dolls, Barbies, My Little Ponies and my doll house, all inside the comfort of my playroom down in our cool, bug-free basement.

But then, when I was 15, I met the young man who would become my husband, Derrick, and he loved the outdoors. So in a space of six months, I went hiking, became a student of football, snow skied for the first time, learned to play tennis and joined our high school track team.
Fast forward 24 years, two moves, two daughters, four careers and three churches later, I shocked my hubby one day by saying that we should buy a pontoon boat. Since that wasn’t in the budget, my resourceful, professional-banker husband suggested kayaks. So, for the past two years now, that has become one of our family’s favorite pastimes. We get to enjoy being outside (even me), exploring different areas of Percy Priest Lake, a mere three-minute drive from us. All around us, blue herons, ducks, geese and a wide variety of fish abound, not to mention that we get to swim for free, too.

I hope that I am teaching my daughters to appreciate both the comforts of home that God has given us and the outside world that He created. We can find pleasure in both. And I am thankful for a husband who encourages me to try new hobbies and make new goals for myself. In fact, I’ve been thinking of (walking) a 5K.
