Moms, it's time to step up your game and prepared to defend yourselves. Self-defense is a good skill to learn. And, there are FREE classes coming up in May that you should sign up for.

Self-Defense Class

The Franklin Police Department (FPD) offers a free self-defense training class to women who live or work in Williamson County. The 12-hour program builds awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance. Also, you get hands-on self-defense training by experienced police officers. No previous experience needed. In fact, FPD encourages mothers and daughters to do this program together.

"Helping to provide this training is something that I always look forward to,” says RAD Instructor, Sergeant Amy Butler. “Participants walk away from this experience with a renewed feeling of confidence that they can avoid or overcome an attacker, we just show them how.”

This four-day series requires registration. Classes take place May 6, 7, 13 and 14 from 3 - 6 p.m. at the Franklin Police Headquarters (900 Columbia Ave.). For more information or to register, e-mail Sergeant Amy Butler at amy.butler@franklintn.gov. Learn more or register online at franklintn.gov.

Handgun Shooting & Safety Class

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) offers a Free Handgun Shooting and Safety Class May 7 - 23. Space is limited, so sign up today! It's also open to anyone, not just women! However, if you miss this opportunity, there are more days to sign up for: Aug. 6 - 22 or Oct. 1 - 17.

The free three-week class teaches beginners how to shoot a handgun or if you just want to learn more about it. It meets Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 - 9 p.m. and the two middle Saturdays from 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday classes are held at the WCSO gun range where you will practice what you learn in the classroom. The classroom and range are located at the John I. Easley Criminal Justice Center at 408 Century Court in Franklin.
